The Brief

Meadow House is an adaptation and extension project developed for Mark, a wheelchair user with complex care needs following a life-changing accident.

The brief centered on creating an accessible environment where he could continue to participate in kitchen activities alongside his family and carers.

Working closely with Arkhi Care, the family sought to transform an existing property into a fully accessible home capable of supporting 24-hour care. The design needed to accommodate live-in carers, specialist equipment, therapy spaces, and evolving medical needs, while still functioning as a comfortable, dignified family home.

The Challenge

The existing house presented significant accessibility limitations. The kitchen was unsuitable for wheelchair use, there was no space for carer accommodation, and circulation throughout the property did not support safe transfers or specialist equipment.

Mark’s complex physical and cognitive needs required extensive spatial planning including provision for two-person assisted transfers, hoist systems, therapy areas, and discreet integration of assistive technologies.

The challenge was to transform a conventional home into a fully supportive environment without losing its warmth or family character.

The Solution

Meadow House was reimagined through a carefully planned combination of extension and internal reconfiguration, creating a home that fully supports Mark’s care needs while restoring comfort and quality of life for the whole family.

Dedicated carer accommodation ensures 24-hour support can be provided discreetly, while an activity and therapy room fitted with an integrated H-track hoist system offers space for physiotherapy, exercise, and daily rehabilitation within the home.

Through thoughtful planning, sensitive zoning, and seamless integration of care requirements, Meadow House demonstrates how complex accessibility adaptations can create a home that supports intensive care needs while remaining dignified, calm, and deeply rooted in family life.
